Other than working the front desk of a gay bathhouse in Denver, Brian McKay is a bit of a recluse. At the best of times, his social life consists of work, role-playing games at a local toy shop, and making YouTube videos with his Teddy Bear hamsters. The arrival of the holidays—with the annoying music, Christmas shopping, and all the reminders of how he disappointed his father—just reinforces his reclusive nature.
When James Olsen, a gorgeous daddy bear who frequents the bathhouse, notices him, Brian is at a loss. He’s not proud of his own bear status or his struggle with weight. The idea that James has interest in him beyond an easy hookup is more than Brian can fathom. But with a little bit of holiday magic, James might help Brian learn to accept Christmas again—and himself.

So any fat person knows that it is very hard to get over any self loathing that may have become ingrained. Any fat person knows those not so subtle judgmental looks and those snide comments disguised as helpful suggestions. Any fat person knows that despair that we will never truly find someone to love us as we are without wanting to fix us or change us in some way.The same goes for the home bodies and the nerds and the geeks. Unless you have found someone withing your own community, it is exhausting have to justify your interests and desires. It is annoying that "normal" folks want you to be like them instead of trying to build a life together bringing out each other's best qualities.
In this short story, Brandon Witt has presented a character who is so real that I could feel what he was feeling and with ever self deprecating comment, I saw myself. In this short story, Mr. Witt gave me something to cry about because he reached a part of me that I try so hard to keep walled up and ignored because I refuse to hope only to be let down yet again. In this short story, the author gave me a face paced yet totally believable and sweet romance that made me utterly jealous. I want what Brian has now found and now will have to spend some time building that wall back up around that hope I keep hidden so deep.
But it was totally worth the happy tears because this story was cute, sweet and full of Christmas goodness. Brian is everyone who has ever doubted themselves or did not fit the perfection mold dictated by society. And James is every person who has a pretty outside but can also think and feel for themselves. And together, Brian and James are a picture of what life can be for anyone who is still looking for that other piece of their souls.
I am sure the author had no intention of his story being read this way, but for me, this story was more than just a little Christmas fling. This one his me where it hurts in all the right ways.

Teddy Bears 2016 Advent Calendar Bah Humbug edition by Brandon Witt Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I'm new to the Witty world, and it just keeps getting better! Teddy Bears reaches out to that inner geek in all of us that just wants to be loved. It's a fantasy come true, but oh how heart warming and sweet along with the sexy! And it gets sexy! Plenty of mouth-covering gasps and "oh no they didn't!" moments. Witt introduces us to great characters and immediately we're rooting for them to find love! And for someone who can relate to Christmas not being a positive experience as a kid, and for someone who never felt accepted for who they were by a parent, Witt gets it. He really does and he'll make you feel vindicated with this story! Thanks for sharing!
This book is all you need on a cold winter night to just sit, sip your hot chocolate (spiked with some rum) and enjoy your heart being filled with hope, and love. You are definitely gonna feel the drops of the holiday spirit injected in your soul.
Teddy Bears tells a story of a Christmas miracle that brings two older daddy bears together in the most charming, most lovable way. I had a constant smile on my face while I was reading it in one sitting.
The characters are truly special, and Brian, with his amazing hobbies and his passion for life, is especially unique. This is a real feel good short that will give you an 'everything is possible ' kinda feeling.
I love Brandon Witt's writing style. He not only creates complex and unique characters, but puts them in everyday situations in an imaginary world we could easily be part of. I love the elegance and simplicity of his writing. How he makes every single one of his characters our best friends we like and want to protect. This story is no exception.
The important lesson we all have to learn one way or another is to be ourselves, to follow our dreams and to accept ourselves no matter what. Teddy Bears shows us a wonderful example. Highly recommended!
Real, honest, unfiltered. Brandon Witt gives us another story and characters that don't hold anything back in terms of letting us into their hearts and deepest thoughts and emotions.
Connected to this is a realization it hit me, Witt is one of the best, and favorite of mine, storytellers using first person pov. The fearlessness in his writing comes through crystal clear by way of the high level of emotional honesty he bestows upon his characters and therefore us. It makes me feel lucky to read these stories and know these people he shares with us. It can sometimes make things extra intense, especially if the character is especially so, but that goes with the territory.
This is about as laid bare as one can get, no pun intended. Who hasn't experienced this same surreal feeling, wavering second by second between joyful amazement and numbing disbelief?
Q Showering was a little surreal. Which I didn’t even realize could be said about a shower. What I was getting clean for, who I was getting clean for…. Was this really my life? /Q
The scenes immediately preceding and following this thought of Brian's, my goodness, relatable and full of truth.
Angel and Spike ftw! I want to watch them snack on wee bitty baby Xmas trees. D
This is sexy. And sweet. And sad. It's also hopeful. And hot. (unf level hot)
A mere teeny taste
Q Or the way his kiss made me feel like I wasn’t able to stand, yet might burst into flight. /Q
True caring between two people, and the openness in accepting it, reveals itself when they help each other see themselves in ways they otherwise might not have done so. Good ways. Important ways.
James does this for and with Brian. And he's open and ready, wanting to let Brian in as the change is happening.
Q Talk about cart before horses. Or a sleigh before reindeer.
Oh my God. I must have gotten a virus. I was sick. I was altering colloquialisms to have Christmas themes. It was enough to tempt me to go see exactly what Bathhouse Santa was doing. /Q
Ha! D
Also, Witt always finds an undeniable way of ramming right to the center of my heart and squeezing until I choke up. There's no escape. And I don't want to, at that.
Q “I want you to know that how you are is how I want you." /Q
Yeah, I'm sighing and melty and teary, too.
What a beautiful story about two regular guys, each with hang ups, dreams, and the self-surprising bravery that comes with age. Being 40+ is sometimes a boon. ;)
